Diesel Exhaust Fluid FAQs
What is diesel exhaust fluid?
Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is a high-purity solution of urea in de-ionized water (32.5 percent) used to chemically reduce NOx emissions from vehicles powered by diesel engines. DEF is contained in a separate tank and sprayed into the exhaust gases; you should never fill a diesel fuel tank with DEF.
Your DEF consumption will be approximately 2 to 4 gallons per 100 gallons of diesel used.
What are the ingredients in diesel exhaust fluid?
The most common diesel exhaust fluid ingredients are urea (32.5%) and de-ionized water (67.5%).
Is diesel exhaust fluid flammable?
No, DEF isn’t flammable. Neither urea nor de-ionized water is combustible.
Does diesel exhaust fluid freeze?
Yes, DEF can freeze. Diesel exhaust fluid’s freezing point is 12 degrees Fahrenheit. Most vehicles have a dedicated DEF tank heater to prevent freezing. Keeping idle vehicles and equipment in a heated or insulated space during colder months is best.
Does diesel exhaust fluid go bad?
Stored in a cool, dry place, DEF typically lasts up to two years. However, heat exposure, direct sunlight, and excess humidity shorten its shelf life. DEF should be clear; discolored or cloudy DEF may be degraded or contaminated.
Is diesel exhaust fluid safe to handle?
Yes, DEF is safe to handle. Follow these tips to transport and use DEF safely:
- Only fill DEF into the DEF tank; the blue cap will be marked with “DEF.”
- Use dedicated equipment for DEF and regularly clean the equipment.
- If overheated, DEF containers can be placed in cold, standing water.
- Store DEF in an area that doesn’t get below 12°F, as this is its freezing point.
- Only use DEF delivered in dedicated, sealed packages designed for DEF.
- Do not fill DEF into the diesel fuel tank and vice versa.
- You do not need protective gear, but you should always avoid getting DEF on your clothes and skin. If you spill DEF on yourself or your surroundings, remove it using water.
- Do not use DEF when mixed with water or other substances, especially diesel fuel. Cross-contamination can damage equipment and reduce efficiency.
